Halloween is such a fun time of the year! Fun costumes, carving pumpkins, trick-or-treating, and spooky decorations are a few of the things we look forward to, but have you stopped to think about how this fun time of year could put your pets in danger? We have put together a list of tips to keep your pets safe this Halloween!
The candy is for the trick-or-treaters! Make sure that the candy being handed out and the candy collected by your little trick-or-treaters is kept out of reach of your pets. Chocolate in all forms can be very dangerous, and the artificial sweetener xylitol contained in some candies can also cause serious problems.
Getting dressed up in cute and creative costumes is great fun for both kids and adults, but before you put a costume on your pet, make sure they like it. Costumes on pets make everyone smile, but some pets can become nervous or anxious. If your pet is not the biggest fan of this year's costume, maybe just put it on long enough for a picture rather than making them wear it all night.
Take care in making sure that your pet can't get out of your house or yard. Opening the door multiple times for adorable trick-or-treaters can be a perfect time for your cat or dog to dart out. Your dog in the back yard may also want to join the fun and dig to escape. It is important to mention that Halloween night is not the safest night for pets, especially black cats, to be wandering the streets. The safest place for them is inside your house.
It is always important to make sure that your dog or cat has proper identification, and this is a great time of year to make sure it is updated. If for any reason your pet escapes and becomes lost, a collar and tags and/or a microchip can be a lifesaver increasing the chances that he or she will be returned to you. If your pet has a microchip, verify that the contact information associated with the chip is correct and up to date. If your pet does not have a microchip and you are interested in getting one, give us a call. It is a simple procedure that we can do any time.
Halloween is an exciting time of year that we want everyone to enjoy. It will make it easier to relax and have a good time if you know that your pet is safe.
