Dental care for your pet may be more important than you think. Dental disease is the most common clinical condition we see in adult dogs and cats. The plaque that accumulates on pet's teeth is filled with bacteria and can lead to oral health issues. Studies show there is a link between oral health and systemic general health. Dental disease affects the kidney, heart and metabolic system.
At Prosper Trail Animal Hospital, we want to make sure that you have all of the tools to take the best care of your four-legged family member. Home dental care can help protect your pet against dental disease.
With all of these products, it is ideal to start with a clean mouth. If your pet is already suffering from dental disease, you may not see the benefits in these products or they may cause discomfort to your pet. With every physical exam at Prosper Trail Animal Hospital, an assessment of your pet's mouth will be done and recommendations will be made if a dental cleaning is needed. If you are unsure if your pet needs a dental cleaning, please feel free to give us a call to schedule a free dental exam for your pet.
The following products are great to use at home to keep your pet's mouth healthy.
CET Toothpaste and Toothbrush
Hill's Prescription Diet T/D
Hill's T/D is a complete and balanced food that can be feed as your pet's sole diet or given to you pet as daily treats. The shape, size and fiber matrix of the kibble allows it to help clean your pet's tooth surface and fight bacteria laden plaque. T/D is clinically proven to reduce plaque, stain, and tartar build up. Below is a great video that shows how it works.
CET HEXtra Chews
OraVet Dental Hygiene Chews
The OraVet Dental Hygiene Chew can be given daily to dogs over 6 months of age, and it is rare that they don't love it. The chewing action works to loosen and dislodge plaque to help it break away from the teeth. Then OraVet Chews form a barrier to help protect against the bacteria that leads to plaque and calculus buildup for a cleaner mouth and fresher breath. One thing to note is that they can cause green stool, but don't be alarmed, this is from the green coloration of the chew. The video below gives more information on the OraVet chew and how it works.
Samples of all the products mentioned are available at Prosper Trail Animal Hospital. If you have any questions or would like get you pet started on a product, let us know. We are here to help!
